Although this comic largely consisted of new material, the first issue features a few examples of the college newspaper strip, which originally ran three times weekly in the University of South Florida's Oracle... as well as a reprint of a kind of origin story, in which Scratch meets Kidmund Krebbs, which ran in Aardvark-Vanaheim's Cerebus in late 1983. Each issue of scratch would feature a "lead" story, usually about 20 pages, which would advance the continuing story lines, and then one or more shorter, self contained features. "The House Scratch Built", this issue's lead feature, introduces Dr. Rex, the last living dinosaur, and Wingz, the little furry blue bat, completing the basic cast that would appear in every issue.
